We supported spinal surgery in the womb

Home Case studies We supported spinal surgery in the womb

Bethan opted for pioneering surgery in the womb after discovering that her baby had Spina Bifida at her 20 week scan.  Previously available in other countries, with Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity, we funded a programme to help bring this pioneering surgical technique to the UK.  A four hour operation to close the gap in baby Elouise's spine was successful and four months later, she was born.  She continues to develop and thrive.

Ths clincial and research teams involved featured in a BBC documentary, 'Spina Bifida and Me' and went on to win a prestigious BMJ Clinical Leaderhip award for their work.
