Thank you to everyone who took part in the UCLH Charity abseil!

The sun was shining, the views were thrilling and we were delighted to cheer on over 90 intrepid fundraisers as they made their way down the White Collar Factory building in London’s Old Street on the weekend of 27 June.

Our abseilers included corporate partners, staff and patients from UCLH.

Among them was inspirational 84 year old Angela who abseiled down the building.

Angela said, “I saw the abseil event advertised at the Cancer Centre about three weeks ago and I thought well, the event is only three bus stops from my flat and it really is the cowards way out as all I have to do is stand still and there would be lots of people looking after me, so I signed up! The hardest part was walking up the gallows!” Angela and JP with medal.jpg

Angela was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer in May 2025 and recently had surgery. She is now in remission, and is still undergoing treatment at UCLH.  Angela said: “I am pleased with myself for doing it—and my friends have been so generous in supporting me on my Just Giving page. If you’ve got the chutzpa you should do it!”

UCLH Charity volunteer John Paul said, “I had the honour of abseiling alongside Angela, who said she wanted to give something back to the hospital that has supported her, but she didn’t want to do it alone. It was an absolute privilege to stand and abseil beside her and make that journey together.

“Angela is nothing short of inspirational. Her courage, determination and positivity are remarkable, and she showed that age is no barrier to doing something extraordinary for a cause that means so much.

“I just wanted to say thank you, Angela, for allowing me to share such a memorable experience with you. You are a true legend, and meeting you is something I won’t ever forget.”

Funds raised from the abseil will support patients, staff and research above and beyond what the NHS can provide. We would like to thank Derwent London for all their support at the White Collar Factory building and their team of fundraisers.

If you are inspired, keep an eye on our events page - there is a challenge for you whatever your fitness level.
