New arrival on the labour ward

Beautiful new artwork has been installed in the labour ward at UCLH creating a welcoming space for patients, visitors and staff.

Funded by UCLH Charity, the artwork in the labour ward at the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Wing, has created a colourful, inclusive environment that celebrates the rich cultural heritage that makes up the UCLH community.

The artwork, created by artist Katie Bond with the arts and heritage team, spans 50 metres of space, features plants, trees and birds with cultural significance across different regions of the world and draws inspiration from the more than 100 nationalities represented among patients and staff.

The artwork reflects themes of hope, resilience, renewal and belonging and was developed through extensive consultation with staff and patients through the maternity and neonatal voices partnership.

Consultant obstetrician Nikki Lack explained the difference the artwork makes to patients and staff, “This artwork has completely transformed the labour ward—it’s brought the natural world into the hospital and has made such a difference for patients and staff. We are so grateful to the donors and UCLH Charity for making this possible!”
